Had a small, intimate shower Sunday. Thanks to YSL and JYK for hosting and friends for attending.

Today, we got another ultrasound to check her growth. They're reporting 7lbs 11oz. With a 15% margin of error, that could as low as 6lbs 11oz. At any rate, we're right within the average range, so all is good.

This morning she was dancing up a storm to King Sunny Ade, which I find absolutely wonderful, even if the splits she was doing across YK's belly were not so welcome to YK.

New Babies

At our appointment today, the office was--for the first time--full of babies. We've seen one or two here and there before, but this was a veritable conference. In the waiting area, a newborn not four days old and still red and raw scratched about for a feeding. Nearby a four-month-old's eyes jumped from one studied gaze to another and then needed a change. In the back someone was commenting that a four-week-old baby in the hallway looked four months.

It was like having the next couple of months laid out before us. It's really beginning to get real and exciting. But the doctor says probably next week. So patience.

And that's actually a good thing, since I have once again left the headlights on in the car and drained the battery. I need until tomorrow for the battery booster I bought to charge up so I can jump start it! Definitely poor timing, but it adds to the adventure. (And compelled me to make the clearly needed purchase!)

Sienna arrives home in the back of a cop car

There is a Korean word I made up: 막초 (mak-cho). 막 (mak) has an etymological meaning of "last", and 초 (cho) means "second". It's a fun word that pleases most Koreans and has become a running joke. When the doctors were beginning to ease us into the idea of ceasarian section (or simply putting us on hold until the shift changed and we could get a fresh doctor to do the surgery),  they had YK change position and it seemed as if it might allow us to avoid surgery if it progressed. At that moment I started jokingly calling Sienna "Mak-cho" Well, on the trip home she continued to live up to her name.

At the hospital, they said they'd probably be able to discharge us. While the usual discharge time is around noon, we were kept later because of emergencies in the hospital and a jaundice test for Sienna. We finally left at 4pm and ran into traffic all the way home. Because of an accident on the Henry Hudson, we decided to get off at 96th, cut across town, give a wonderfully sleeping Sienna a tour of Harlem as we tried to find our way across the Harlem River, and then took the Bruckner to the Bronx River Parkway.

After we pulled off the highway and reached the stoplight five blocks from home, the car started idling very roughly. I put it in park, revved it up, and shifted back into gear when the light changed. Kerplump. Mak-cho. The engine just stopped. I tried unsuccessfully to jump it with the battery booster I have and started calling AAA.

I was interrupted by an incredibly friendly guy in a green van going the other way who asked if he could help, since "we were backing up the whole highway", as we surely were. Just as we started pushing the car, another passerby offered to help and a cop pulled up to see what was going on. Let me just say that these guy's assistance was a true testament to human cooperation. (Of course, it says nothing about the hundred people who simply drove by...)

And let me also say the "Smitty" was the nicest cop I've ever met.  He had two reactions when I told him we were bringing a newborn home from the hospital. The first was, "You're going to a story to tell her." "Yeah, I'm sure she'll be hearing it over and over again." The second was to make sure that YK and Sienna got home soon and safe. To that end, while I tried recharging the battery a bit before waiting for AAA, he put YK and Sienna in the back seat of his cruiser and brought them here. I asked him if he needed the car seat base. He responded that it was okay and he'd drive slowly. To my surprise, I clapped him on the upper arm and said, "Okay. I just don't want you to get pulled over." He look confused a second, then laughed and took my family home safely in the back of his squad car. Thank you, Smitty.

한국에 있는 가족들께...

재인이가 태어난지 벌써 일주일이 지났네, 정말 정신 없는 하루들 이었어.
집에 와서 며칠은 뭘 어찌해야 하는지 좀 어리둥절에, 아가가 울어제낄 때 마다 어찌나 긴장이 되던지,, 지금은 그래도 아가가 울면 배가 고픈지, 기저귀를 바꿔야 하는지, 그냥 안아달라고 우는지,,, 하나 하나 생각을 하게 되고 대처할수 있게 되어가고 있어.

재인이가 이렇게 작고 귀여울때 한국에 있는 우리 가족들도 다 재인이를 만나보면 넘 좋을텐데... 지금은 넘 어려서 한국에 데리고 가기도 어렵고, 8월 중순까지 뉴욕에 올수 있다면, 오라고 하고 싶지만, 넘 늦게 얘기하는게 아닌가 싶기도 하고. 이럴때 가족이 가장 그립게 느껴지는 것 같아. 오빠네 가족은 거의 매일 전화하고 화상으로 연락하고, 오고 싶으면 올수 있는 가까운 거리에 사니깐... 얼마나 부럽던지...

하여간 지금 3.6킬로에 53센티미터의 키를 가진 재인이가 어떻게 커가는지 여기에 많이 써놓으려고 노력할테니깐 자주 들어와서 보도록해.
오늘은 엉덩이에 바람 좀 쐬어 주려고 기저귀를 풀러논 사이에, 재인이가 큰일, 작은일, 토하기를 순서대로 다 해버렸어. 큰일을 확 보는 사이에 놀래서 그거 막 치우고 있는데, 엉덩이 딱고 있는 손에다 다시 한번 묽은 똥을 확,,, 그리고 그걸 다 치워 놓은 위에다 오줌을 다시 한번 확인 사살...
이 모든일이 있는 동안 얼마나 태연한 얼굴을 하고 있던지. 거의 만족하는 듯한 미소까지...

어제는 책 사서 빠른 걸로 보냈다.

전래동화 2권(짧은 것이랑 긴 것)이랑 자장가 씨디랑 책.

정윤이가 인형 자기가 골라서 사고 싶다고 그러라고 했다. 울 윤경이가 아기를 낳다니..
다른사진은 잘 모르겠는데, 이 사진 보니깐 첫 느낌이 커즈랑 비슷한거 같아..
머리새까만거랑 눈 큰거랑 넘넘 이쁘다..
가까이 있음 내가 맨날 가서 도와줄텐데 멀리 있어서 맘만 보내..그래도 유숙(맞나모르겠다)언니가 니 옆에 있어서 얼마나 다행인지 몰라..

그리고 밑에 보니깐 경찰차타고 집에 왔네..ㅋㅋ별일이 다 생긴다니깐..커즈 코멘트 보면 넘 장난꾸러기 같아서 재밌어.. 밤엔 내가 아기 보고, 낮엔 오빠가 많이 도와주지. 밤에 기저귀도 갈아주고..
진영아 맘 잘 받았다, 타향살이가 이래서 힘든가보다, 지금까지 별로 큰 향수를 느껴 보지 못했는데, 이번에 정말 확실히 느끼고 있지.ㅎㅎ
언니~ 보내주는 선물들 잘 받을께. 난중에 전화해~~ 언니 순산하신거 너무 축하드리구요..

Day 12 - Pretty in Pink?

Grandma requested a picture of Sienna all dressed up and pretty. Well, so far she seems to have my taste for fashion. She seems to detest pink, which I'm currently convinced is not the most attractive color for her. Between her squirming and screaming once we'd dressed her, this is the most attractive shot we got:

Day 12 - Peace

As I hear Sienna break out whining in the background, I'm happy to report that today things have gone fairly well compared to the previous few. We took her (and the repaired car) out for a test drive today. Reasonably enough, she hated the slow traffic at the beginning of the trip and gave the other drivers a serious piece of her mind. Once we got moving, though, it was all peace and calm.



She was even completely (well, almost completely) relaxed during our third sponge bath at home. Unbelievable! (But, of course, I'm waiting for the change...)

The other day I saw my reflection in Sienna's eyes as I held her and realized that the image below, which takes into account the fact that newborns distinguish contrasts and not colors, will probably be one of Sienna's earliest (non)memories. (The ceiling fan is behind my head.)

We thought we'd try distracting Sienna with the stuffed caterpillar toy that the Kim's passed on to us yesterday so that we could get through some lunch. As long as we jiggled the toy and thus rang the little bells inside, she was content. Well, content enough for YK to get through most of her lunch.

Sienna's crying is painful to me (as any child's crying is to their parents). To calm her down, I often offer her my pinkie finger as a pacifier. As she regains her composure, Sienna makes a sound that just cracks me up...no matter how upset everyone is. This is that sound (from a few days ago):

So we've been up in Cape Cod, where the rain is abundant and the Bay is still lovely. Unfortunately, we're completely wireless. We've got great wireless access, but we also have no wires to transfer photos from cameras to computers. So it doesn't look like there will be any updates for a some days more.

2 mo update

We're just back from the pediatrician. Sienna got her two-month-old checkup and first immunizations. For those who want the details:

• Weight: 5.3kg = 11lb 11oz


• Height: 57.5cm = 22.6in


• Head circumference: 39cm = 15.4in

And, yes, she bawled when they stuck her.

Three-month-old stats

With two days to go before her three month birthday and a month to go before she gets properly weighed and measured by the pediatrician, we've calculated that Sienna Jane is now 12.3lb (5.6kg) and 64cm (25.2"). By my calculations that's about the 5oth percentile for weight and the 90th for height.

I don't have time now to process the video, but we are convinced that today Sienna has started to reach for and grasp objects. She obviously lacks loads of coordination, but it's just amazing to see her suddenly realizing that she can move things in her environment.

First of all, it is to celebrate the baby's health, it is that infant mortality thing. Second, if you calculate the baby's birthday from the day she is conceived, 100th day is the actual 1 year birthday. It also explains why the baby is 1 year old from the time they are born.
Anyway, What more reasons do you need for having a party, Right?

Sienna's been somewhat ill for the last week. And when baby's sick, everyone's sick. And the only one who gets any sleep is Sienna. But 윤경 is super-strong and is doing an amazing job. Soon we'll all be healthy again...just in time for round two of immunizations.

Pediatrician update

So, she's still a bit sick. Regular coughing, but nothing serious. The pediatrician yesterday wasn't even phased. But I do have new weights and heights for the record.

• Weight: 6.14kg (13lbs 8oz)
• Height: 61cm (24")

And she's received round two of immunizations. So far, so good.
